Hahahaha!  This is totally correct!  And this book is entirely responsible for my unshakeable conviction that my cats secretly surf the net when I'm not home.

I got this from the awesome blog Judge a Book by its Cover.  If you enjoy discussions about phallic cover art (especially Baen cover art), this is the blog for you.

Has anybody been hearing about the law being proposed regarding unionization?  It would provide for open balloting for unionization for industries/companies, instead of secret ballots.  The arguments are long and technical (and I'm totally simplifying), but how can people fall for this?  Secret ballots allow employees to vote for what they truly want, without fear of reprisal.  How is it better for workers to be exposed to retaliation and bullying?

Full disclosure - I'm totally biased.  I worked for years in a union company, and it bugged the hell out of me that the union would fight for every piece of dirt employee that got fired, even if they spent their whole shift in the bathroom or had no productivity whatsoever and forced their fellow employees to cover their lazy asses.   One guy I worked with got fired/rehired 14 times and was only finally booted when they caught him stealing ON CAMERA.  The union would fight every attempt of the company to improve the starting pay and benefits - in order to keep employees and stop churn - by demanding that every proposed raise in the minimum wage ($8) had to be mirrored for the guy who'd been there for 25 years and already made $38 bucks an hour and had 6 weeks of vacation and full health care.  The union liked having 85% new employees turnover because they could keep getting that initial huge union payment (on top of monthly dues) over and over again.  In that union, being a good, productive, innovative employee was a lot less important that having your ass in place longest.  They ate a huge chunk of my paycheck monthly and never did a damn thing for me.

I've studied a lot of history and understand the roles that unions have played in it.  I know that they have long kept workers from dangerous, horrible working conditions and insane workdays/weeks.   I'm never going to argue that they should all be outlawed, abolished or marginalized.  But you should definitely have the option of saying "No" without having to worry about hatemail and ostracism.

Whew!

I liked tonight's episode, but not enough to dissect it.  This post is mainly about the preview for next week, which is the 100th episode of House, an amazing milestone and achievement for all of the cast and crew, especially those who've been there since the beginning.

I'm not spoilering it, because it's not going to surprise anyone who has been watching for the past year and a half.  The 100th episode of House is about...

drumroll please...

Thirteen.

Of course.

Blech.

Those of you that know me in real life could probably imagine my reaction to the news today that Roman Polanski  is trying to get the charges dropped against him for the crimes he comitted in 1978.

I am and always have been completely, mouth-frothingly irrational on the subject, incapable of discussing it without using language my mother would be ashamed of and yelling at the top of my lungs.  Mr. Polanski, I don't CARE if the judge and the district attorney had it out for you in 1978 - YOU DRUGGED AND RAPED A CHILD!.  And then ran away to France and immediately got yourself a 15-year-old girlfriend.

I lost so much respect for Harrison Ford when I found out he made Frantic in France for Polanski as a way to help him out.  I can't tell you how it horrifies me that Jack Nicholson is there for his buddy after Polanski used his house as the place to rape the girl.  I screamed like a banshee at the television when Polanski got the standing ovation and an Oscar for the Piano, despite the fact that he couldn't be there to receive it in person because, oh yeah, HE RAPED A CHILD!

I just don't understand the rationalizations.  Yes, I know Samantha Geimer, the girl in question, has gone on record saying she thinks he should be able to come back to this country and doesn't think he should go to jail.  I think she must be an amazing person to have created a good life and gotten past the anger - but the law isn't dependent on the wishes of victims.  And it's not dependent on the wishes of criminals.  I'm sorry (sarcasm) if Mr. Polanski didn't get to skate with 42 days of time served like he thought he should have.  I don't think that living in France is equivalent to jail, or that exile from Hollywood is either.  I don't care about the Holocaust childhood or Sharon Tate and Helter Skelter - it doesn't excuse a damn thing.  And I'd like to know if Harrison Ford, Jack Nicholson, and all of those Hollywoodites who gave that standing ovation would happily leave him in a room alone with their 12-year old daughters.

CREEP.

Ahh, it's good to be in Big 12 country, where the college football is crazy and the fans are a)smug or b)hopping mad or c)enjoying the chaos.  That'd be a) Sooner fans, b)Longhorn fans and c) sad ol' me, the Texas Aggie fan, who, frankly, had very little to cheer about this season.

But I am enjoying the "I hate the BCS" rhetoric, especially since it's not the BCS's fault that the Big 12 decided to use their standings as the fifth tiebreaker should a three-way tie happen in a division of their league.  What do you want to bet no one in the history of the Big 12 had even read the fifth tiebreaker rules until late this season?  I bet an intern wrote them.

It's funny to me that many of the folks who are arguing for a playoff still aren't arguing to get rid of the BCS - they're arguing that the top 8 teams of the BCS would then be in a playoff.  This, to me, makes marginally more sense than the other playoff argument, which involves the conference winners and a few extra teams.  Because, some of the conferences?  Are TERRIBLE at football.  The Big 12 South was a monster this year, and would still probably only get Texas and Oklahoma into a playoff, and I'd put OSU and Texas Tech up against the winners of a lot of the conferences any day.

The arguing is quite fun, though.  The sports stations must be thanking the sports gods for all the controversy.

And A&M?  Yeah, TOTALLY not going to a bowl.   We got beaten by Baylor!
