How to Make Friends         (1/1)

Get out and meet people!

Talk to people

Be fun to be around

Be reliable

Be trustworthy

Be there

Wilson had crossed PPTH off the list as a place to find potential new male friends right off – he wasn’t particularly eager for House to find out what he was doing, and he really didn’t want to discover what House would do to whichever unfortunate Wilson found to befriend.  Luckily, the winnowing of his new staff kept House occupied – otherwise, he probably would have recognized the oddity of Wilson vanishing from his non-work life so precipitously after the Electrical Outlet Incident.

The Incident that had nearly stopped Wilson’s heart.

It wasn’t a good thing, to be so wrapped up in one relationship at the expense of all others, Wilson knew.  He had known it for a long while, really, but sheer exhaustion after Tritter had sapped his will to change things until the Electrical Outlet had the effect of shocking Wilson alongside House.

He needed someone else in his life.  (Not a girlfriend or a wife – no, three wives and innumerable girlfriends had shown him that a woman was no defense against House-obsession.)  He needed other friends, guy friends…one other friend, even, just to take the edge off.  To divert a little of his attention, for hopefully greater rewards.

To give him someone to hang onto, in case House’s clear disregard for the continuance of his own life was as real as it seemed.

The first thing Wilson tried was a cooking class – Asian Cuisine, 101 – at the local community center.  He was always up for expanding his repertoire, after all, and learning to cook Thai food could only lower his takeout bills when cravings hit.  Making new (not-House) friends was simply to be a fortunate side effect.

There were ten women in the class, and Wilson.

All of the women seemed to be in it for the knowledge, not trolling for dates, but he did end up with two phone numbers after the first class.  He kept going back, because the recipes and techniques were interesting, but he realized he needed to try a different tack.

The next thing he tried was an automotive repair class – Your Car and You, 101, under the theory that he would at least be able to speak “car” once it was over, even if he still couldn’t fix anything.  There were two additional men in this class, along with eight women.

The two other men spent the whole class chatting up the women, trying to impress them with already extensive automotive knowledge.  The smirking instructor soon directed them to the more advanced class, and Wilson was once again on his own.

It was the instructor from that class that gave him his next idea, and that’s how he ended up as a square-dancing cowhand in the community theater’s production of Oklahoma!  The various males in the cast were either married or otherwise attached, and tended to bolt right after rehearsals, but he found he didn’t mind that much.  He enjoyed himself a great deal, while living in terror that someone from the hospital would find out and tell House all about it just to see his head explode.  But apparently the only person from PPTH who came to see the play (or the only one who actually took a close look at Cowhand #4 anyway) was House’s former fellow candidate, Henry.

Henry came up to Wilson outside the stage door after the last Saturday performance and complimented him on his do-si-do.  Wilson smiled, shook Henry’s hand, and managed not to call the man Ridiculously Old Fraud to his face.

Henry offered to buy Wilson a drink.

It's nice to see Henry again, too.

Oh, Wilson baby. Only you would sign up for cooking class, automotive class and musical theatre expecting to make male friends.

Not very logical, was it? Honestly, I just tried to picture things I thought Wilson would like to do - and they wrote themselves!

Oh. Yes. I knew there was a reason I liked Henry so much. Because he is like House only nicer and more experienced, so of course he'd see Wilson needed and wanted a friend. House doesn't.

This is perfect in and of itself so I'm not going to ask for a sequel. I'd love to see more of the Wilson-Henry friendship though.

I think Henry could give back to Wilson a little better than House. But then, so could a brick wall. :)

Awesome little fic. Wilson attempting to get a life is just adorable and kind of sad. And how much do I love Wilson getting beers with Jacob Carter Ridiculously Old Fraud? Really quite a lot :)

I guess he decided to go for Amber instead of Henry. Oh well. (Sorry about the late reply on the comments - never got the notification.) Thanks for the feedback!
